Terra (mythology)

Imagine the ground beneath your feet, the tall trees, and the yummy fruits you eat. In ancient Rome, people believed all of this came from a powerful goddess named Terra, also called Tellus. She was like a super mom for everything on our planet!

She was so important that she was counted among the top gods, especially the ones who helped with growing food. She was often shown with a cornucopia, which is like a magical horn overflowing with goodies, or holding flowers and fruits.

Long, long ago, when Rome was just starting, people already knew about Terra. She was one of the very first earth goddesses they worshipped. Later on, the Romans also had a god of the sky, like Caelus or Jupiter, who was like her partner.

Think of it like the sky above and the ground below, both important! Her Greek name was Gaia, and she was celebrated in many ways, showing how much people cared about the Earth.

Terra was super important because she was the source of all life and food! Farmers prayed to her for good harvests, hoping she would make their crops grow tall and strong. She was closely linked with Ceres, the goddess of grain. This shows that the Romans understood how much the Earth gives us, from the food we eat to the ground we play on. They knew that a happy Earth meant happy people.

Terra's main job was to be the Earth itself, giving life and making things grow. She was often shown rising from the ground, as if she was pushing out new life. Her special items, like the cornucopia, flowers, and fruit, were symbols of her amazing ability to provide. She was a reminder that the Earth is a generous and giving place, always ready to share its bounty with those who respect it.
