Its proximity to Accra, the national capital, just 25 kilometers to the west, facilitates crucial administrative and economic linkages.

As the capital of the Tema Metropolitan District within the Greater Accra Region, it functions as a vital administrative and economic node. The city's climate is characterized by tropical savanna conditions, with high temperatures and humidity year-round, punctuated by distinct wet and dry seasons. This environment supports a rich biodiversity, though urban development has significantly altered the natural landscape.

The city's coastal morphology, with its relatively stable shoreline, was conducive to the ambitious engineering project of constructing a deep-sea harbor, a defining feature that shapes its urban fabric and economic trajectory.

Commissioned by Ghana's first president, Kwame Nkrumah, as part of a broader vision for industrialization and modernization, its development was spearheaded by Theodore S. Clerk, Ghana's inaugural architect and an award-winning urban planner.

The construction of its deep-sea harbor, completed in 1961, was the linchpin of this plan, transforming a modest fishing village into a burgeoning urban center. The organizational principle of Tema is evident in its structured layout, comprising 25 distinct, numbered communities. Tema transitioned from an Autonomous Council in 1974 to a Metropolitan Assembly in December 1990, signifying its growing importance and administrative capacity. As part of the sixteen Metropolitan, Municipalities, and Districts within the Greater Accra Region, the Tema Metropolitan Assembly manages local affairs, urban planning, and service delivery. Its boundaries are clearly defined, sharing frontiers with neighboring districts, highlighting its role within the broader regional administrative framework and its ongoing development as a self-governing urban entity.

A fascinating geographical distinction sets Tema apart: it is one of the few urban centers globally through which the Greenwich Meridian (0 degrees longitude) passes. This imaginary line, fundamental to global timekeeping and cartography, bisects the city. The presence of the Meridian Rock serves as a tangible marker of this significant geographical feature.

This unique characteristic places Tema on a global coordinate system, symbolically linking it to the rest of the world.
