Key Facts

What Stars Are Made Of
Mostly hydrogen and helium gas.
How They Shine
Through nuclear fusion, where hydrogen atoms combine to make helium.
Our Closest Star
The Sun.
Fun Fact
The light from some stars has traveled for billions of years to reach our eyes!

Meet the Giant Balls of Fire!

Stars are HUGE, super-hot balls of glowing gas, mostly made of hydrogen and helium. Our own Sun is a star! It looks small because it's so far away, but it's actually gigantic. Some stars are even bigger than our Sun, while others are much smaller. They twinkle because their light has to travel through Earth's wobbly atmosphere.

How Stars Make Their Own Light!

Stars shine because of something called nuclear fusion happening deep inside them. It's like a giant, continuous explosion! Atoms of hydrogen smash together to make helium, and this process releases a LOT of energy as light and heat. This is why stars are so bright and warm, even from millions of miles away.

Why Stars Are Super Important!

Stars are like cosmic powerhouses! Our Sun gives us light and warmth, which helps plants grow and keeps our planet from being a frozen ice ball. Without the Sun, life on Earth wouldn't be possible. Other stars are so far away we can't feel their heat, but they help us understand how the universe works.

Looking Up at the Stars!

People have looked at stars for thousands of years, telling stories and using them to find their way. Ancient sailors used stars to navigate across oceans. Today, scientists use powerful telescopes to study stars and learn about space. We can even see different patterns of stars called constellations, like the Big Dipper!
