Meet Iron, Earth's Favorite Metal!

Iron is a super important metal that's all around us, even though we can't always see it! It's like a hidden superhero. Did you know that most of the Earth's middle, called the core, is made of iron?

That's a LOT of iron! It's also found in rocks and soil. Pure iron looks like a shiny, silvery-gray metal, but it loves to play with oxygen and water, which makes it turn into rusty brown stuff.

It's the fourth most common element in the ground we walk on.

From Meteorites to Your Playground!

Long, long ago, much of the iron we found on Earth came from space rocks called meteorites! Imagine a giant space rock crashing down and leaving behind this amazing metal. People learned how to heat iron rocks in super hot ovens, hotter than a pizza oven, to get the metal out.

This was so important that it started a whole new time period called the Iron Age, when tools and weapons were made of iron instead of bronze. This happened thousands of years ago!

Why Iron is Awesome for You!

Iron is like a tiny delivery truck inside your body! It's a key part of something called hemoglobin, which is in your blood. Hemoglobin carries oxygen from your lungs to all the parts of your body so you can run, jump, and play.

Iron also helps store oxygen in your muscles. Without enough iron, you might feel tired. Eating foods like spinach and red meat helps give your body the iron it needs to be strong!

Iron's Amazing Powers!

Iron is a building block for so many things! When we mix iron with other things, we can make super strong materials like steel. Steel is used to build tall buildings, bridges, cars, and even the frames of your bicycle. It's strong, but also not too expensive, which is why we use it so much. It’s the cheapest metal, so it’s a great choice for making lots of useful things for everyone.
