Stanley Clifford Weyman

Imagine someone who loved to pretend! Stanley Weyman was a real person who loved to dress up and act like he was someone he wasn't. He would pretend to be important people like a consul, a navy officer, or even a doctor!

He was born Stephen Jacob Weinberg in a big city called Brooklyn, New York. He didn't have much money, so he found a fun, but tricky, way to live a different life by pretending to be someone else.

Stanley had many pretend jobs! One time, he pretended to be a U.S. consul, which is like a special representative for the country in another land. He even got to inspect a big Navy ship called the USS Wyoming! He also pretended to be a doctor and threw fancy parties. Sometimes he got caught, but he always found a new way to pretend to be someone else, like a British Army pilot or a journalist.

One of Stanley's biggest tricks was when he met a princess from Afghanistan. He pretended to be a Navy officer and promised to help her meet the President! He even got her $10,000 to give to 'officials' as gifts. He used some of that money for a fancy train ride and a nice hotel for her. But he was eventually caught for his tricks and had to go to jail.

Even though Stanley played a lot of tricks, he did something very brave at the end of his life. He was working as a hotel porter, which is like a helper at a hotel. When someone tried to rob the hotel, Stanley tried to stop them! He was sadly shot, but the detective said he was very brave for trying to help. It shows that even people who make mistakes can do brave things.
