Who is the Spirit Bear?

The Spirit Bear is a super special kind of American black bear. Most black bears are, well, black! But some of these bears are born completely white, like a fluffy cloud.

They are so rare that only about 100 to 500 of them are thought to live in the wild. These white bears are called Spirit Bears, and they are like the hidden treasures of the forest. They live in a beautiful part of Canada called British Columbia.

Where Do They Play?

Spirit Bears love to explore the forests and islands along the coast of British Columbia in Canada. Think of big, green trees and cool, misty air! They especially like three islands named Gribbell, Princess Royal, and Roderick. On these islands, about 10 out of every 100 bears you might see could be a white Spirit Bear. That's like finding a special white pebble on a beach full of colorful ones!

A Bear with a Story

Long, long ago, the First Peoples of this land told amazing stories about the Spirit Bear. They believed these white bears were very special and brought good luck. They are so important that the Spirit Bear is even the official animal for the whole province of British Columbia! It’s like being the star player on a whole team.

What Makes Them Special?

The most amazing thing about Spirit Bears is their color! While most black bears are black, these special ones are pure white. This is because of a special gene they have. They are still the same kind of bear as the black ones, just with a different coat. They eat berries, fish, and bugs, just like other bears. Seeing one is like seeing a real-life unicorn!
