Where is South Sulawesi?

Imagine a big island shaped like a funny letter 'K'. South Sulawesi is the very bottom part of that 'K' in Indonesia! It's like the toe of a giant shoe.

It has a long coastline where the ocean meets the land, and lots of smaller islands scattered around, like sprinkles on a cookie. The biggest city here is called Makassar, and it's a super busy place. It's warm and sunny there all year round, perfect for playing outside!

Who Lives Here?

Lots and lots of people call South Sulawesi home! It's one of the most crowded places on the whole island. There are three main groups of people: the Buginese, the Makassarese, and the Torajan. They all have their own special ways of talking, dressing, and celebrating. They are known for being very friendly and welcoming to visitors. It’s like a big, happy family living together!

Awesome Boats and Busy Jobs!

People in South Sulawesi are great at working with the sea! Many people are farmers, growing yummy food, or they are fishermen, catching fish for dinner. They also have a special kind of boat called a 'pinisi'.

These are big sailboats with two tall masts, like giant toothpicks sticking out of the water. The Buginese and Makassarese people use these boats to travel between islands, carry things, and go fishing. It’s like their own special delivery trucks on the water!

Stories from Long Ago!

A long, long time ago, South Sulawesi was a very important place for trading spices. Spices are like magic dust that makes food taste super yummy! It was like a busy doorway to other islands.

There were even kings and queens ruling different parts. Sometimes, people from far away, like the Dutch, came to trade too. They learned a lot from the people who lived there and heard amazing stories about brave rulers and exciting adventures.
