Key Facts
Hello, Sea Cows!
Imagine a giant, slow-moving animal that looks a bit like a fluffy potato with flippers! That's a manatee! They are also called 'sea cows' because they love to eat plants, just like cows on a farm.
Manatees are super gentle and spend most of their day swimming and eating in warm, shallow waters. They have big, paddle-like tails that help them glide through the water. They are so big, they can be as long as a school bus!
What's on the Menu?
Manatees are picky eaters, but only about one thing: they only eat plants! They are herbivores, which means they munch on all sorts of yummy green things they find in the water. They love seagrass, water hyacinths, and other leafy plants. They can eat a lot, too – up to 10% of their body weight in a single day! That's like a kid eating a whole pizza and then some!
Where Do They Hang Out?
You can find these amazing creatures in warm, shallow waters. They like to swim in coastal areas, rivers, and bays. Some manatees live near the Caribbean Sea, like in Florida, while others call the waters around West Africa or the Amazon River home. They need warm water to stay healthy, so they often move to warmer spots when the weather gets chilly.
Super Slow and Super Sweet
Manatees are known for being very slow and curious. They move at a gentle pace, which is why they sometimes have trouble avoiding boats. Sadly, this can lead to them getting hurt. But don't worry, people are working hard to protect these wonderful animals. They are truly special creatures that make our oceans and rivers even more amazing!
