The Great Vicksburg Treasure Hunt!

Imagine a city holding a giant river hostage! The Union army had to get it back in a super long game of hide-and-seek.

What's the Big Deal About Vicksburg?

Vicksburg was like a super important lock on a giant water slide, which was the Mississippi River! If the Union army could capture Vicksburg, they could control the whole river. This was a HUGE deal because it helped them split the bad guys, the Confederates, into two pieces. It was like cutting a pizza in half so one side couldn't get any more toppings!

The Sneaky River Crossing!

The Union general, Ulysses S. Grant, was super clever. He and his soldiers crossed the Mississippi River at night, like ninjas! They snuck past the city's defenses. The Confederates, led by General John C. Pemberton, were trapped inside Vicksburg. They had to stay inside their forts and walls, and the Union army waited outside.

Waiting Game: The Siege!

When the Union army couldn't break through the city's defenses easily, they decided to 'besiege' Vicksburg. That means they surrounded the city and waited. The people and soldiers inside Vicksburg ran out of food and supplies. Imagine being stuck inside your house for over a month with no snacks! It was very tough for them.

Victory Day and a Split Country!

Finally, on July 4th, a very important day in America, the Confederates gave up! The Union army won Vicksburg. This victory was like a giant key that unlocked the Mississippi River for the Union. It also split the Confederate states into two parts, making it much harder for them to fight. President Lincoln even said Vicksburg was 'the key to the war.'
