The Great Wall That Saved a City!
Key Facts
A City Under Attack!
Once upon a time, a powerful city called Constantinople was surrounded by a giant army from far away. These soldiers wanted to take over the city! But Constantinople had super-duper strong walls, like a giant castle, that were very hard to break. The attackers built big camps and tried to stop anyone from getting in or out, hoping the people inside would give up.
Secret Weapons and Sneaky Ships!
The people inside the city had a secret weapon called Greek fire. It was like a super-flammable liquid that they could shoot at the enemy ships! It burned even on water, which was very scary for the attackers. Their ships were also blocked by the city's amazing walls and a chain across the water. This meant the city could still get food and help from friendly ships.
Winter Woes and Brave Warriors!
The attack lasted a very long time, through a whole winter! It got super cold, and the attackers didn't have enough food. Many of them got sick. Meanwhile, brave warriors from a land called Bulgaria attacked the enemy soldiers from behind! This made the attackers very tired and scared. They realized they couldn't win.
The Big Escape!
Finally, after more than a year, the big army decided to go home. They packed up their tents and sailed away. But their journey wasn't easy! Their ships got caught in bad storms, and most of them were lost. The city of Constantinople was safe! This big fight helped protect the city and stopped the attackers from going further into Europe for a long, long time.
