A Watery Shortcut!

The Sea of Marmara is like a special watery road that connects the Black Sea to the Aegean Sea. It’s like a big, blue highway for boats! This sea is entirely inside the country of Turkey. It’s not super huge, about as long as driving from your house to a friend’s house far away, and not as wide as a big playground. It’s a very important place for ships to travel through.

Splitting Land in Two!

This cool sea does something amazing it splits Turkey into two parts: one part is in Europe, and the other part is in Asia! Think of it like a giant blue ribbon separating two playgrounds. The sea is surrounded by land, and it has two narrow openings, called straits, that let the water flow in and out. These straits are super important for ships to get from one sea to another.

Deep, Deep Down!

Even though the Sea of Marmara isn't the biggest sea in the world, it can get very, very deep! In some spots, it’s as deep as a 10-story building is tall! That’s super deep! This depth means lots of different kinds of sea creatures can live there. The water is also a mix of salty water from the Aegean Sea and less salty water from the Black Sea.

Home to Many!

Lots of people live all around the Sea of Marmara because it’s such a great place for boats and for getting fresh fish. The biggest city in Turkey, Istanbul, is right on the edge of this sea! So, many people use this sea every single day for traveling, for work, and for fun. It’s a busy and beautiful part of Turkey.
