Key Facts
Baghdad: A City of Wonders!
Once upon a time, Baghdad was a super famous city, like the coolest playground in the whole world for learning and art! It was the capital of a big empire called the Abbasid Caliphate. People came from everywhere to share stories, invent new things, and make beautiful art. It was a place buzzing with ideas, like a beehive full of busy bees creating amazing honey!
The Mighty Mongol Army Arrives!
Then, a HUGE army called the Mongols, led by a brave prince named Hulegu, came marching. They were like a giant wave of soldiers, many more than you could count on your fingers and toes! Hulegu wanted to make sure his part of the world was safe. He had already conquered other places, and now he was heading towards Baghdad. It was a very serious situation for the city.
A Big Fight for the City
The Mongols surrounded Baghdad, which had about 30,000 soldiers protecting it. That sounds like a lot, but the Mongol army was much, much bigger! They used amazing machines that could throw big rocks to break down the city walls. It was like a giant game of building blocks, but instead of building, they were trying to break through! The fight lasted for a few weeks.
What Happened Next?
Sadly, the city of Baghdad fell to the Mongols. It was a very sad time, and many people lost their lives. The city was looted, meaning the soldiers took many things. This event was so important that some people say it was the end of a special time called the Islamic Golden Age, when lots of amazing discoveries were made. It was a turning point for the city and the world.
