Who is Selene?

Imagine a beautiful lady who is the Moon itself! That's Selene. In ancient Greek stories, she was the goddess of the Moon.

She was like the Moon's own special queen, shining brightly in the night sky. Sometimes she was also called Mene. She was part of a big family of gods and goddesses, with a brother who was the sun god and a sister who was the dawn goddess.

Selene would drive her special chariot across the sky, pulled by magnificent horses, to bring the moonlight to the world.

Selene's Starry Family

Selene had super-powerful parents, the Titans Hyperion and Theia. Her brother was Helios, the god of the Sun, who brought us daytime. And her sister was Eos, the goddess of the Dawn, who painted the sky with beautiful colors every morning.

Selene was like the night's answer to her bright brother. She also had many stories about who she loved, including other gods and even a mortal man named Endymion. These stories show how important the Moon was to people long ago.

Moon Magic and Myths

Selene was so special that people thought of her as the Moon itself. In later times, people sometimes mixed her up with another goddess named Artemis, who was also linked to the Moon. But Selene was the original Moon person!

She was one of three goddesses connected to the Moon, but she was the one who truly was the Moon. Her stories helped explain why the Moon looked the way it did and why it was so important for nighttime.

Selene's Roman Cousin

Did you know that other places had their own Moon goddesses too? In ancient Rome, the goddess who was like Selene was called Luna. She had a very similar job, representing the Moon and its gentle light.

It's like how different countries might have different names for the same animal. Even though they had different names, both Selene and Luna were celebrated as the beautiful, mysterious Moon in the sky, guiding people through the night.
