Who is Helios?

Imagine the Sun as a powerful god named Helios! In ancient Greece, people believed Helios was the one who drove the Sun across the sky every single day. He was like the ultimate driver, making sure the Sun rose and set.

Helios was also known as the god of sight, meaning he could see everything happening on Earth. He was even a guardian of promises, so people would call on him when they made important oaths!

Helios's Amazing Ride!

Helios didn't just float across the sky; he had a super cool, horse-drawn chariot! This chariot was like a fiery carriage pulled by powerful horses. Every morning, Helios would start his journey in the east, and his chariot would blaze a path through the sky, bringing light and warmth to the world.

As the day ended, he would travel to the west, and the Sun would set. It was a daily adventure for the Sun god!

A God with Superpowers!

Helios was a Titan, a very old and powerful type of god. His parents were Hyperion and Theia. He had siblings too: Selene, the goddess of the Moon, and Eos, the goddess of the Dawn. Helios was often shown with a bright, glowing crown, like a halo of sunshine. People believed he was all-seeing because the Sun shines on everyone and everything.

Helios and His Sacred Cattle

In one famous story, Helios had special, sacred cattle on an island. His friend Odysseus's men were very hungry and, even though Helios warned them not to, they ate the sacred cattle. Helios was so angry that he asked Zeus, the king of the gods, to punish them. Zeus sent a lightning bolt and destroyed their ship, saving only Odysseus. This shows how important Helios and his sacred animals were!
