Key Facts
A Church Hugged by a Canyon!
Deep in Colombia, South America, there's a super special church called the Sanctuary of Las Lajas. It's not just any church; it's built right into the side of a huge canyon, next to the Guáitara River! The canyon walls are made of a special kind of flat rock called 'laja'.
This rock is what gives the sanctuary its name. The whole place looks like it's being hugged by the giant canyon walls, making it a truly amazing sight to see.
A Miracle on the Rock?
People believe that a picture of a mother and baby, called the Madonna and Child, appeared on the rock wall all by itself, like magic! No one painted it; it just showed up. This amazing picture is why so many people visit. They believe it's a sign from above. The church you see today was built a long, long time ago, starting in 1916 and finishing in 1949. That's longer than you've been alive!
A Holy Rock Star!
This church is so special that even the Pope, who is like the leader of all Catholics, has given it important titles. He called the picture 'Holy Virgin of the Rock' and made the church a 'Minor Basilica,' which is a very special honor. People travel from far away, even from the country of Ecuador next door, just to see this holy place and the amazing rock picture.
It's like a famous landmark that draws people from everywhere.
What's a 'Laja' Anyway?
The word 'laja' is a Spanish word that means a flat, smooth stone. Think of a big, flat paving stone you might see in a garden, but much, much bigger! The rocks in the canyon where the church is built are made of this type of stone. This is why the church is called the Sanctuary of Las Lajas. The rocks are so important that they are part of the church's name and its whole story!
