Key Facts
Meet the Giant Ditch!
Canyons are like super deep ditches in the ground, with really steep sides. They are made by rivers that flow for a super, super long time. Think of a river like a tiny sculptor, slowly chipping away at rocks, carrying the pieces downstream.
Over millions of years, this tiny sculptor can carve out a canyon that's bigger than your school playground or even taller than a skyscraper! Some canyons are so deep, you'd need to stack many school buses on top of each other to reach the bottom.
How Did They Get So Deep?
It all starts with water! Rivers love to find the easiest path, and sometimes that path is through rock. As the river flows, it carries tiny bits of sand and pebbles.
These bits act like sandpaper, rubbing against the riverbed and sides. If the land is higher up where the river starts and lower down where it ends, the river will flow faster and carve deeper. It's like water sliding down a slide โ the steeper the slide, the faster it goes!
This is called erosion, and it's how canyons are born.
WOW! Canyons Around the World!
Canyons can be found all over the world, in hot deserts and even near snowy mountains! The Grand Canyon in Arizona is super famous and is so wide you can't see the other side easily. It's also incredibly deep, deeper than many tall buildings stacked up.
Some canyons are very narrow, like a crack in a wall, and are called slot canyons. Others are found underwater, deep in the ocean, and are made by underwater landslides!
Why Are Canyons So Cool?
Canyons are like windows into Earth's past. The layers of rock you see on the canyon walls tell stories about what the land was like millions of years ago. They are also amazing homes for animals and plants that are used to dry or rocky places.
People love to hike, climb, and explore canyons, but it's important to be careful because they can be dangerous. They show us the amazing power of nature and how the Earth is always changing.
