Key Facts
When the Harvest Ends and Winter Begins!
Samhain (say SAH-win) was a super old party that happened a long, long time ago in places like Ireland and Scotland. It was celebrated on the night of October 31st, right when autumn was saying goodbye and winter was getting ready to say hello. Think of it as the last big hurrah before the cold, dark days set in.
It was a special time because it was right in the middle of the year's seasons, halfway between the autumn equinox and the winter solstice.
Ghostly Gatherings and Glowing Fires!
People believed that on Samhain night, the doors between our world and the world of spirits, or 'fairies,' would open! It was a bit spooky, but also exciting. They would light big bonfires, which they thought could protect them and make them clean.
Sometimes, people would dress up in costumes to try and trick or hide from these spirits. They also thought the souls of their family members who had passed away might visit them.
Feasts, Fun, and Fortune Telling!
Samhain wasn't just spooky; it was also a time for big parties and yummy food! Families would bring their farm animals down from the summer fields and prepare them for the winter. They'd have special feasts and set a place at the table just in case a visiting spirit wanted to join.
People also loved to guess what the future held, often using things like nuts and apples for fun fortune-telling games.
Samhain's Echoes Today!
Even though Samhain was celebrated ages ago, its traditions are still around! Many of the things we do for Halloween, like dressing up in costumes and going door-to-door for treats, come from these old Samhain customs. It's amazing how ancient celebrations can still be part of our lives today, reminding us of the changing seasons and the magic of the past.
