Key Facts
Meet the Very First Town!
Long, long ago, a special Spanish town was built. Its full name was super long: El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles del Río de Porciúncula! But everyone called it the Pueblo de los Ángeles. It was like the great-great-grandparent of the giant city of Los Angeles we know today. This little town was started in 1781, and it was a place where people lived and worked together.
Where Did They All Come From?
The people who started this town came from far away, mostly from a place called Estado de Occidente. They were brave settlers who wanted to build a new life. They also needed help from the people who already lived there, the Indigenous people. It was like building a new playground, but you need lots of friends to help put it all together!
What Made This Town Special?
This town was special because it was one of the first towns built by the Spanish in California. It was a 'pueblo,' which means a civil town, different from forts or churches. The town grew because people raised lots of animals, like cows and sheep, on big ranches. These animals were super important for food and other things they needed.
From Tiny Town to Big City!
The Pueblo de los Ángeles started with just 44 people in 11 families. That's like a small class at school! But as more people arrived and soldiers decided to stay, the town got bigger and bigger. It became the main city in that part of California, and eventually, it grew into the massive, bustling Los Angeles we see today!
