Yaanga

Yaanga was a big village that used to be super close to where downtown Los Angeles is today! It was just a little bit west of the Los Angeles River, almost like it was hiding under a big road called U.S. Route 101. Think of it like a secret playground hidden in plain sight! The people who lived there were called Yaangavit, and their village was the biggest and most important one around.

The people of Yaanga were very busy! They were known for being strong workers. Sadly, when other people came to the area, they made the Yaangavit work very hard, like building missions and helping to make the city grow. It was like they were forced to be builders and helpers for everyone else. Even though it was tough, their village lasted a long time because people needed their help.

Over time, Yaanga started to change a lot. It wasn't like a normal village anymore; it became more like a place where people who had to leave their homes went. The people in charge wanted everyone to live and act like them.

Eventually, the village was moved, and then, sadly, it was completely flattened to the ground in 1847. But pieces of their old homes and things they used are still found under the city today!

Even though the village is gone, the story of Yaanga is super important. It tells us about the very first people who lived in this area and how they lived their lives. Finding old things from Yaanga helps us learn about history. It's like finding treasure that tells us stories from hundreds of years ago, showing us how people lived before there were cars or tall buildings!
