Key Facts
What's a Cow (or Bull)?
Cattle are big, farm animals that come in many colors and sizes. The boys are called bulls, and the girls are called cows. They have four legs, a tail, and sometimes big horns! Cows are known for giving us yummy milk that we drink and use to make cheese and butter. Bulls are often stronger and used for helping with farm work or for breeding. They are super important farm animals!
Where Do Cattle Live?
Cattle live all over the world, on farms and ranches! They like grassy fields where they can munch on plants. You can find them in hot places and cold places, as long as there's food and water. They are domesticated, which means people have taken care of them for a very, very long time, helping them live happily on farms instead of in the wild.
What's for Dinner?
Cattle are herbivores, which means they only eat plants! Their favorite food is grass, but they also love hay, which is dried grass. They have special stomachs that help them chew and digest all those plants. They spend a lot of their day eating and chewing their cud, which is like a super-chewed ball of grass they bring back up to chew again!
Baby Cows and Big Families!
Baby cows are called calves. A mother cow usually has one calf at a time. The calf stays close to its mom for a while, drinking milk and learning how to be a cow. Cattle can live for about 15 to 20 years, which is a long time, like being a grown-up for many, many years!
