Key Facts
Meet President Lincoln!
Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States. That means he was like the captain of a giant ship called America! He started his job in 1861 and was president for a little over four years. He was the very first president from a new political group called the Republicans. Lincoln had a really important job because America was going through a very difficult time called the Civil War.
A Country Divided!
When Lincoln became president, the country was split into two parts: the North and the South. Many people in the South wanted to leave the United States, but Lincoln believed the country should stay together. He said 'No!' to them leaving.
This disagreement led to a big war, the Civil War, which started when soldiers in the South attacked a fort in 1861. Lincoln had to figure out how to win the war and keep America united.
Freedom for Many!
One of the most amazing things Lincoln did was help end slavery. Slavery is when one person owns another person, which is very wrong. In 1863, Lincoln made a special announcement called the Emancipation Proclamation.
This said that millions of enslaved people in the South were now free! Later, a new rule called the 13th Amendment was added to the Constitution to make sure slavery was against the law everywhere in America.
Lincoln's Lasting Legacy
Even though Lincoln faced many challenges, he was a strong leader. He helped America win the Civil War and kept the country together. He also made sure that slavery was ended. Sadly, he was assassinated just a few days after the war ended. But people remember him as a hero who saved the country and helped millions of people become free. He is still considered one of the greatest presidents ever!
