Prehistory of Australia

Australia is a HUGE island continent way down south. For thousands and thousands of years, long before cars or even houses like ours, people called this amazing place home. They lived here when mammoths might have still been around in other parts of the world! It's a land of sunshine, unique animals, and ancient secrets waiting to be discovered.

The very first people to live in Australia were the ancestors of today's Aboriginal Australians. They traveled a very, very long time ago from lands that are now in Southeast Asia. They might have walked across land bridges or taken short boat trips. It’s like they were the first explorers of this giant island, finding new places to live and thrive.

These ancient Australians were super smart! They knew how to find food, build shelters, and live with nature. Some even used fire to help grow plants, a bit like gardening! They had around 250 different languages, which is more than you can count on your fingers and toes! They were amazing hunters and gatherers, living in harmony with the land.

We know about these ancient people because of clues left behind. Archaeologists find old tools, campsites, and even ancient bones! The oldest signs of people are in a place called Arnhem Land, and the oldest human bones found are over 40,000 years old, which is older than most castles! These discoveries help us piece together their incredible story.
