Meet Pope Leo X!

Pope Leo X was like the boss of the Catholic Church a super long time ago, from 1513 to 1521. His real name was Giovanni de' Medici, and he came from a very famous and rich family called the Medici. They were like the rock stars of banking and art in Italy!

Even though he was young, he became a cardinal, which is a very important person in the church, and then he became the Pope! He was in charge of lots of important decisions.

A Family of Famous People!

Giovanni's dad, Lorenzo de' Medici, was a super important leader in Florence, Italy. Think of him like the mayor of a really big, fancy city! The Medici family was known for being super smart and for helping artists create amazing paintings and buildings. So, Giovanni grew up surrounded by beautiful art and clever ideas. It's no wonder he became a big fan of art himself when he became Pope!

Building Big and Painting Bright!

Pope Leo X loved art so much that he helped artists make incredible things. He asked a famous artist named Raphael to paint beautiful pictures in the Vatican, which is where the Pope lives. He also helped start rebuilding a HUGE church called St.

Peter's Basilica. It's so big, it's like building a whole new town! He also made the university in Rome even better, so people could learn more about old stories and poems.

Uh Oh, Some Big Changes!

When Pope Leo X wanted to raise money to finish St. Peter's Basilica, he asked people to give money and in return, he said it would help them. But a man named Martin Luther didn't think this was right and wrote down his ideas. This started a big disagreement that changed the church forever! Pope Leo X didn't agree with Martin Luther, and it made things tricky.
