Key Facts
King of a HUGE Land!
Philip IV was a king who ruled over a super-duper big empire. It was so big, it covered an area of about 12.2 million square kilometers! That's like having more than 300,000 soccer fields all put together! His empire stretched across many places, like a giant blanket covering parts of Europe, the Americas, and even Asia. He was like the boss of a really, really big playground.
A King Who Loved Pictures!
Philip IV was known as the 'Planet King' because his empire was so vast. But he was also famous for something else: he loved art! He was a big supporter of talented painters, especially one named Diego Velázquez.
Velázquez painted amazing portraits of the king and his family. Imagine having your picture painted by the best artist in the world! Philip's love for art made Spain a very colorful place.
When Was He King?
Philip IV became king when he was quite young, in the year 1621. He ruled Spain for a very long time, until he passed away in 1665. That's longer than most kids are in school! During his time as king, there were big wars happening in Europe, like the Thirty Years' War. It was a busy time for a king, with lots of important decisions to make.
Did He Make Things Better?
Even though Philip IV ruled a massive empire and loved art, his time as king wasn't always easy. He tried to make changes to help his country, but sometimes it was hard to fix everything. By the time he was no longer king, the Spanish Empire was still very large, but it was also starting to face some challenges. He was followed by his young son, Charles II.
