Meet the Planet Detective!

Percival Lowell was a super curious guy who loved looking up at the stars. He was born a long, long time ago, in 1855. He wasn't just an astronomer; he was also a businessman and writer! He had big dreams and a big imagination, and he used his smarts to explore the mysteries of space. He even started his own special place to look at the sky, called the Lowell Observatory.

Did He Find Aliens on Mars?

Percival Lowell thought he saw 'canals' on Mars. These were like long, straight lines that he believed were built by Martians to carry water! It was like finding a giant, secret highway system on another planet. While we now know these weren't canals, his idea made lots of people excited about Mars and the possibility of life there. It was a really cool guess!

Searching for a Hidden Planet!

Lowell also believed there was another planet hiding in our solar system, way out past Neptune. He spent a lot of time trying to find it. He didn't find it himself, but his search was so important that it helped other scientists discover Pluto many years later, even though Pluto is now called a dwarf planet. His work helped us learn more about our cosmic neighborhood!

A Starry Legacy!

Even though Percival Lowell is not with us anymore, his curiosity still shines bright! The observatory he built is still used by scientists today to study the stars and planets. His big ideas about Mars and hidden planets inspired many people to become astronomers and keep exploring the universe. He showed us that asking big questions can lead to amazing discoveries!
