Pecos River

The Pecos River begins its journey high up in the Sangre de Cristo mountains in New Mexico. It starts at a super high spot, over 12,000 feet up, which is taller than many tall buildings stacked together! From there, it tumbles down and flows for a very, very long way, about 926 miles. That's like driving from your house to another state and back many times!

This amazing river doesn't just stay in one place. It starts in New Mexico and then travels all the way into Texas. Finally, it joins up with an even bigger river called the Rio Grande. The name 'Pecos' comes from a Native American language called Keresan. It was the name for a special place called the Pecos Pueblo. Long ago, other Native American people, like the Mescalero people, called the river 'Río Natagés'. So, the river has had different names, telling us about the people who lived near it a long, long time ago.
