Patrice Lumumba was a super important person in the country of Congo, in Africa. He was born a long, long time ago, on July 2, 1925. Imagine a time before many of your parents or grandparents were even born!
He grew up to be a leader who wanted his country to be independent, meaning it could make its own rules and not be told what to do by other countries. He was like the captain of a ship, guiding his people towards freedom.
The Big Dream: A Free Congo!
Patrice Lumumba had a big dream: for the Congo to be a free and strong country. For many years, Belgium, a country far away, was in charge of the Congo. Patrice Lumumba worked very hard to change this. He became the first Prime Minister, which is like the main leader, of the Congo when it became independent in 1960. This was a huge moment, like winning a big game for his whole country!
A Sad Story, But a Brave Fight
Sadly, Patrice Lumumba's story has a sad ending. After Congo became free, there were many problems. Some people didn't want him to be the leader anymore.
He was captured and sadly, he was killed in 1961. But even though he is gone, people remember him as a hero who fought for his country's freedom. Belgium, the country that used to rule Congo, even said sorry for their part in what happened to him.
