Parliament of Scotland

Scotland is a country in the United Kingdom, way up north in Europe. The Parliament of Scotland was like a special club for important people in Scotland. It wasn't a building like your school, but more like a group of people who met to talk about what was best for their country.

They made rules and decided things like how to spend money. It was a very old way of running a country, starting way back in the 1200s!

This special club had different groups of people. There were church leaders, like bishops, and important noble people, like lords and ladies. Later, people from towns, called burghs, also joined.

Think of it like different classes at school all coming together to decide on a big project. They had to agree on things, and sometimes they even disagreed with the king! It was a place where everyone had a voice, even if it was a very old-fashioned voice.

The Parliament of Scotland had a lot of power! They could say yes or no to the king asking for money to build things or go to war. They also helped make laws that everyone had to follow. It was like being the ultimate decision-makers for the whole country. They even helped decide who Scotland should be friends with or fight against. It was a very busy place with lots of important jobs to do.

The Parliament of Scotland was around for hundreds of years, which is a super long time! But in 1707, something big happened. Scotland decided to join with England to become one country called Great Britain.

Because of this, the Parliament of Scotland stopped meeting. It was like the club closed down, and a new, bigger club was formed for both Scotland and England. But the ideas from the old Parliament still matter today!
