Key Facts
The Orange River's Big Adventure!
Imagine a super long river, longer than 1,300 school buses lined up end-to-end! That's the Orange River, South Africa's longest river. It starts way up high in the mountains and then travels all the way across the country to the big, blue ocean. It's like a giant, winding road made of water, helping plants and animals survive, especially in dry places.
Where Does the Water Come From?
The Orange River gets its water from rain and snow that falls in the Drakensberg Mountains. This water then rushes down, filling up the river. Sometimes, it's a big, powerful river, and other times, especially when it's dry, it can be much smaller. It's a bit like a giant's drink that sometimes gets refilled!
Life Along the Watery Road
Even though parts of the Orange River flow through deserts, it helps create green spaces. People use its water to grow yummy fruits like grapes and oranges, and also for farming other foods. Lots of animals, like birds and fish, call the river home. It's a super important water source!
Fun Facts About the Orange!
Did you know the Orange River is named after the Dutch royal family, the House of Orange? It's also a border for South Africa with another country, Lesotho! This amazing river is a lifeline, bringing water and life to many parts of South Africa.
