Old Crow Flats

Old Crow Flats is a super big wetland, like a giant puddle, in the very north of Canada. It's so far north, it's above the Arctic Circle, which is like an imaginary line around the top of the Earth! It's near the cold Beaufort Sea and is almost completely hugged by tall mountains. Think of it as a secret watery world hidden away!

This amazing place is a super important home for lots and lots of birds. It's like a giant rest stop and nursery for them! Many different kinds of birds fly here to build their nests, lay eggs, and raise their babies. It's a busy place with chirps and squawks all summer long. The wetland is full of water plants and bugs that the birds love to eat.

Because it's so far north, Old Crow Flats is very cold for most of the year. It's covered in snow and ice for a long time. But when summer comes, it's like magic! The ice melts, and the whole place turns into a huge, wet wonderland. The sun shines for many hours, helping all the plants grow and the animals get ready for winter.

People have lived near Old Crow Flats for a very, very long time. They are called the Gwichʼin people, and they have their own special language. They know this land very well and have learned how to live with the animals and the weather. They have special names for places, like 'Van Tat' for Old Crow Flats, which means something special in their language.
