Nicolau Coelho

Imagine a super-smart sailor from a long, long time ago, around the year 1460! That was Nicolau Coelho. He was an amazing navigator, which means he was really good at figuring out where ships were going, even on the big, wide ocean. He lived in a country called Portugal and was part of a time called the Age of Discovery, when people loved to explore new places.

Nicolau Coelho was a friend and helper to famous explorers like Vasco da Gama. Vasco da Gama found a new way to sail all the way to India! Nicolau Coelho was in charge of a ship called the 'Berrio,' and it was the very first ship to sail back and tell everyone about the amazing discovery. He also sailed with another explorer, Pedro Álvares Cabral, who was the one who found Brazil!

Nicolau Coelho loved the sea and was very brave. He sailed on many long and exciting journeys. Sadly, he didn't get to come home from his last trip. He was sailing back from India with a big fleet of ships when something happened at sea, near a place called Mozambique.
