Key Facts
Where the Water Flows!
Imagine a super long river, like a giant blue ribbon, that flows from one big lake to another. That's the Niagara River! It's about as long as 36 football fields lined up end to end. This amazing river makes a border between two countries: Canada and the United States. It's full of exciting twists and turns, and it’s home to one of the most famous waterfalls in the whole world!
The Roaring Giant: Niagara Falls!
The most exciting part of the Niagara River is Niagara Falls! These aren't just any waterfalls; they are HUGE! The water crashes down with a mighty roar, making a misty cloud that you can see from far away. Over thousands of years, the falls have actually moved upstream, like a slow-motion race! It’s like the river is carving its own path through the land, creating a deep canyon as it goes.
Island Adventures and Whirlpools!
Did you know there are islands in the Niagara River? The biggest ones are Grand Island and Navy Island. Goat Island is super special because it splits the giant Niagara Falls into three parts: Horseshoe Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and American Falls.
Downstream from the falls, there's a crazy swirling pool called the Niagara Whirlpool. It looks like a giant bathtub drain where the water spins around and around!
Powering Up with Water!
Even though the river is wild, people have found ways to use its power. Big buildings called power plants use the rushing water to make electricity, like the power that lights up your house! They have special dams to help control the water. Boats can also travel on parts of the river, but to get past the big waterfalls, they use a special shortcut called the Welland Canal.
