Nehushtan

Nehushtan was a very special object from a long, long time ago. It was a statue of a snake made out of shiny bronze, and it was put on top of a pole. The ancient Israelites believed this snake stick had a special power to help people who were bitten by poisonous snakes. If they looked at it, they wouldn't get sick or die from the snakebite. It was like a magical cure from the past!

The story of Nehushtan starts with a time when the Israelites were having a tough time. They were bitten by fiery, poisonous snakes, and many people were getting very sick. To help them, God told Moses to make this bronze snake and put it on a pole. Anyone who looked at the snake on the pole would be healed. It was a way to show God's power and help his people when they were in trouble.

For a long time, the Israelites kept Nehushtan. They even started to offer sacrifices to it, which means they treated it like a god! But then, a king named Hezekiah decided this was not right. He thought people should only worship God, not statues. So, he bravely smashed the bronze snake into pieces. He wanted everyone to remember that the real power came from God, not from an object.

Even though King Hezekiah broke Nehushtan, the idea of using snake statues for healing wasn't totally new. Archaeologists have found similar bronze snake objects in other ancient cities. These might have been used for medicine or healing, too.

It shows that people in different places long ago were interested in finding ways to get better when they were sick, and snakes were sometimes part of those ideas.
