Meet the Kingdom of Judah!

Long, long ago, there was a special place called the Kingdom of Judah. It was like a big family of people who lived together in a land with hills. Their most important city was Jerusalem, which was like the king's super cool castle town!

For about 400 years, this kingdom was ruled by kings from the same family, the Davidic line. The people who lived there were called Judeans, and that's where the name 'Jews' comes from!

From One Big Kingdom to Two!

Before Judah was its own kingdom, there was an even bigger one called the United Kingdom of Israel. Think of it like one giant playground! But then, it split into two smaller kingdoms.

Judah was one of them, and it was in the southern part of the land. For a long time, people wondered if Judah was really a big kingdom early on, or if it grew bigger over time. It had some strong forts and many small villages.

Kings, Changes, and Big Adventures!

Sometimes, Judah had to be friends with bigger, stronger empires like the Assyrians and Babylonians. But they also had brave kings like Josiah, who made important changes to how people lived. There was even a time when a powerful king named Nebuchadnezzar II came and sadly destroyed Jerusalem, taking many people away. This was a very tough time for the people of Judah.

A New Beginning!

After a long time, the people who were taken away were allowed to go back home! A kind king named Cyrus the Great helped them rebuild. They got to have their own rules again, but they were still part of a bigger empire. It took many, many more years, and a big fight called the Maccabean Revolt, for the people of Judah to be truly free and independent again!
