Key Facts
Meet the Water Keeper!
Nanhua Dam is like a super-duper big bathtub for a whole lake! It's a giant wall made of earth and rock that holds back tons of water. This water is super important because it helps give fresh water to people in Tainan and Kaohsiung, two big cities in Taiwan. It’s like the dam is a big water superhero, making sure everyone has enough to drink and use every day!
How This Giant Was Built!
Building Nanhua Dam was a HUGE project that started way back in December 1988. It took years to finish, and the water started filling up behind the dam in July 1993. Imagine filling up a bathtub that’s as big as a lake! The whole dam was ready to work its magic by March 1994. It’s a curved dam, which is pretty neat, and it’s as tall as a 20-story building!
A Tunnel to More Water!
Sometimes, the rain doesn't fill the lake enough all by itself. So, guess what they did? They built a secret tunnel! This tunnel is like a water slide that brings extra water from another river, the Qishan River, all the way to Nanhua Dam. It adds so much water that it’s like adding a whole extra playground’s worth of water to the lake every year!
Uh Oh, Muddy Water!
Because Nanhua Dam is in the mountains, sometimes rain washes lots of dirt and mud into the lake. This is called sediment. After a big storm called Typhoon Morakot, a LOT of mud, like 17 million truckloads, ended up in the water! So, workers had to start a special project to clean out the mud and keep the water nice and clear for everyone.
