They are born blind and hairless in the safety of the lodge or burrow. Within a few weeks, they develop rapidly, becoming capable of swimming and foraging independently. The average lifespan in the wild is relatively short, often only 1 to 3 years, primarily due to predation and environmental challenges.
However, under optimal conditions and in captivity, they can live up to 10 years. Their populations can fluctuate significantly, influenced by factors such as habitat availability, food resources, predation pressure, and disease, but their overall conservation status remains 'Least Concern' due to their adaptability and broad distribution.
