Key Facts
Meet the Snowy Giant!
Mount Baker is a HUGE mountain in Washington State, USA. It's covered in snow and ice all year round, like a giant ice cream cone! It's so tall, it's the third-highest mountain in Washington. Think of it like a super-tall playground slide, but way, way bigger! It's part of a group of mountains called the Cascade Range, and it's a volcano that's still alive, but sleeping for now.
A Mountain with a Secret Past!
This mountain has been around for a very, very long time, maybe even longer than your grandparents' grandparents! It's a volcano, and while it's sleeping now, it has been active. The mountain we see today is actually quite young, like a teenager, compared to older mountains that have mostly worn away from the snow and ice. It's like a brand new building on top of an old foundation.
Snowy Superpowers!
Mount Baker is one of the snowiest places on Earth! In 1999, the ski area nearby got SO much snow, it set a world record. Imagine 95 feet of snow falling – that's taller than a 9-story building! All that snow and ice makes Mount Baker have more ice than all the other Cascade volcanoes combined, except for Mount Rainier. It's like a giant ice chest for the whole region!
Who Lives Near This Snowy Giant?
People have lived near Mount Baker for thousands of years. Indigenous peoples have special names for it, like Kweq' Smánit. Explorers from far away saw it too. One explorer named it after a sailor named Joseph Baker. Today, people can see Mount Baker from big cities like Vancouver in Canada and Seattle in the United States. It's a famous landmark that many people recognize.
