Monte Pissis

Monte Pissis is a super tall, extinct volcano hiding in South America, way up high in the Andes Mountains. It's so big it sits right on the border between two countries, Argentina and Chile! Think of it like a giant dividing line made of rock.

It's far away from big cities, nestled in a very dry place called the Atacama Desert. Even though it's super dry, it has a surprising secret: a big icy glacier on top!

This volcano is so tall, it's actually the second-tallest volcano in the whole world! It's like having a playground slide that goes up higher than a skyscraper. Even though the land around it is super dry, like a sandy beach with no water, Monte Pissis has a big glacier on its peak.

This is super unusual, like finding a snowman in the middle of summer! The ice has cracks in it, called crevasses, which makes it look even more amazing.

This giant mountain wasn't always called Monte Pissis. It got its name from a very smart scientist named Pedro José Amadeo Pissis. He was a geologist, which means he studied rocks and mountains, and he worked for the government of Chile a long, long time ago.

He was French but helped out in Chile. So, people decided to name this impressive mountain after him to remember his work exploring the amazing lands of South America.

Monte Pissis is in one of the driest places on Earth, the Atacama Desert. It hardly ever rains there! But, guess what?

This volcano has a glacier on top, which is a big chunk of ice. It's so rare to see a glacier in such a dry place. The very top of Monte Pissis is the highest spot on Earth that doesn't have a permanent glacier, which is a really cool and surprising fact about this amazing mountain!
