Where the Rivers Meet!

Middlesex was a special place in England, like a big puzzle piece! Its edges were mostly made by three rivers: the mighty Thames, the winding Lea, and the Colne. Think of them like natural fences!

To the north, there were hills, like a bumpy backbone, separating it from another area called Hertfordshire. Most of this land is now part of a super big city called Greater London, but tiny bits are in other places too. It was one of the smallest counties, so it was cozy!

The Land of the Middle Saxons!

Long, long ago, a group of people called the Saxons lived here. They were called the 'Middle Saxons' because of where they settled. Over time, this land became known as Middlesex.

It was like their special homeland. Even though the big City of London was nearby and very important, Middlesex kept its own identity for a long time. It was a bit like having a favorite toy that stays yours even when you play with friends!

Growing Pains and Big Changes!

As the City of London grew bigger and bigger, it started to spread out into Middlesex. It was like a plant growing out of its pot! This made things a bit tricky for the people who lived there.

They had to figure out how to share roads and make sure everyone was safe. In the 1800s, lots of people moved to the southeastern part, making it very crowded. Eventually, to manage all these people and buildings, a new, even bigger area called Greater London was created, and Middlesex became a part of it.

Who Governed This Place?

Middlesex had its own leaders, like a team captain for a sports team. They had a special council that met to make decisions. Imagine them gathering in a big hall to talk about important things for the people living there.

When London grew so much, they decided to create a new, giant area called Greater London. This meant that the old way of doing things in Middlesex changed, and it became part of this new, huge place. It was a big shift for everyone!
