Key Facts
London's Big Boss Team!
Once upon a time, there was a special group called the Greater London Council, or GLC for short. They were like the head teachers for the whole city of London, making sure everything ran smoothly. They helped decide where new parks would be, how buses would travel, and lots of other important things for people living in London. It was a very big job for a very big city!
When London Got a New Helper
Before the GLC, there was another team called the LCC, but they only looked after a smaller part of London. Then, in 1965, London grew bigger, and so did the job! The GLC took over, covering a much larger area. Think of it like getting a bigger playground to share with more friends. This new team had to manage all the new parts of London too.
Bye Bye, GLC!
The GLC worked hard for many years, from 1965 until 1986. That's a long time, like from when your grandparents were young until you were in school! Then, the rules changed, and the GLC was stopped. Its jobs were given to smaller groups called London boroughs, which are like different neighborhoods. Later, a new team called the GLA was created to help run London again.
What Did They Do?
The GLC was in charge of many big things. They helped build roads and make sure there were enough buses. They also looked after big places like museums and even helped with things like fire services. It was their job to make London a great place to live for millions of people. They were like the city's super-organizers!
