Meet the Mighty Thames!

Imagine a super long snake wiggling through the land! That's kind of like the River Thames. It's 215 miles long, which is longer than going to school and back home about 100 times! It starts way up in a place called Gloucestershire and flows all the way to the big, salty sea. It even flows through famous cities like Oxford and London, where you can see cool bridges and boats.

A River with Two Names?

Sometimes, this river has a secret! When it flows through Oxford, people call it the River Isis. Isn't that funny? It's like having a nickname! The river also changes its mood. Near London, it gets a bit pushy because of the ocean's tides, making the water go up and down like a gentle wave. This part is called the Tideway.

Home to Lots of Critters!

Even though it flows through busy cities, the Thames is a busy home for many animals! It has lots of little rivers that join it, called tributaries, and over 80 islands where birds might build nests. The water can be fresh like in a lake or a little bit salty like the sea. This means all sorts of fish and other creatures can live there. It's like a giant, watery playground!

Boats, Bridges, and Busy London!

The Thames is super important for getting around. Lots of boats travel on it, from little rowboats to big ships. There are also tons of bridges crossing over it, each one looking different and special. London, the capital city, is right on its banks. It's a super busy place with lots of people living and working there, and the river is a big part of what makes London so exciting.
