Who Was Maxentius?

Maxentius was a Roman leader, like a king or president, who lived a super long time ago, around 1700 years ago! He was the son of a former emperor, which meant he grew up around important people and big decisions. He got to rule over Italy and North Africa, which are big places with lots of people.

Even though he was in charge, some other Roman leaders didn't think he was a real emperor, which caused a lot of trouble.

Building Big Things in Rome!

Maxentius loved Rome, the capital city, and wanted to make it even more amazing. He started building some really enormous structures. One was a giant temple for his son who had passed away, called the Temple of the Divine Romulus.

He also started building a massive hall called the Basilica of Maxentius. It was so big that another emperor, Constantine, finished it later! Maxentius also built a huge house and a race track for chariots.

A Dramatic End in the Tiber River

Maxentius had a big fight, called a civil war, with another Roman leader named Constantine. They met for a super important battle near a bridge called the Milvian Bridge. Maxentius's army was losing, and in the chaos, he tried to escape across the Tiber River. But, oh no! He fell in and, sadly, drowned. It was a very dramatic way for a Roman emperor to end his rule.

The Last Emperor to Live in Rome

Here's a super cool fact: Maxentius was the very last Roman emperor who actually lived in the city of Rome itself! After him, emperors started living in different places. He really loved the ancient city and spent a lot of time and money making it look grand with all his building projects. He wanted to leave a big mark on Rome, and he certainly did with his impressive buildings!
