Matthew Shepard

Matthew Shepard was a bright young student who loved to travel and explore. He was born in 1976 and was studying at the University of Wyoming. Imagine a friendly guy who enjoyed meeting new people and learning about the world around him. Matthew was a kind person who wanted everyone to feel safe and accepted for who they are.

One night in 1998, something very sad happened near a town called Laramie. Matthew was attacked and left alone. He was found and taken to a hospital, but sadly, he was too hurt to recover. This event was a big shock to everyone, and people wondered why such a terrible thing could happen.

Because of what happened to Matthew, many people wanted to make sure that no one else would be hurt for being different. His parents, Dennis and Judy Shepard, worked very hard to create laws that would protect people from hate crimes. This means crimes done because someone is different, like their religion or who they love.

Thanks to the efforts of Matthew's family and many others, a special law was made called the Matthew Shepard Act. This law helps protect people all over the United States from being attacked or hurt because of who they are. It's like a superhero shield for people who might be targeted for being different.
