Mary Todd Lincoln

Mary Todd Lincoln was the First Lady of the United States when her husband, Abraham Lincoln, was President. That means she was like the President's wife and helped him with his important job! She was born a long, long time ago in Kentucky, a state in America. She came from a big, wealthy family. Even though her family owned slaves, Mary did not and grew up to believe slavery was wrong.

When Abraham Lincoln became President, Mary moved into the White House. It's a very famous building where the President lives and works. Mary was in charge of making the White House a happy place for parties and visitors. She loved to throw big parties and redecorated the White House with beautiful things. Sometimes, she spent a lot of money, which made some people a little worried!

Mary Lincoln had four sons, but sadly, three of them passed away when they were young. She also was sitting right next to her husband, President Lincoln, when he was sadly shot and passed away. These sad events made her very unhappy, and she sometimes felt sick. She even spent some time traveling in Europe to feel better.

Even though Mary Todd Lincoln had many sad times, she was a strong person. She supported her husband's work to help the country. Today, she is remembered as an important part of American history. She is buried with her husband and three of her sons in a special place called the Lincoln Tomb. It's a place many people visit to learn about the Lincoln family.
