Meet Mary, a Brave Lady!

Imagine a lady named Mary who loved to share her ideas about God. She lived a long, long time ago in a place called the Massachusetts Bay Colony. But the grown-ups in charge there didn't like her ideas. They had very strict rules, and Mary's beliefs were different. She believed everyone had a special light inside them. This made the leaders very angry, and they told her she couldn't be there.

A Journey Across the Sea!

Mary and her husband first came from England to America. They wanted to start a new life. But even in America, they had to move because their ideas were too different! They moved to a place called Rhode Island. Later, Mary traveled all the way back to England. There, she learned about a new group called the Quakers. They also believed in that special inner light, just like Mary!

Standing Tall, Even When Scared!

When Mary came back to Massachusetts, the leaders were furious! They had a law saying Quakers weren't allowed. They told Mary to leave, or else! But Mary believed so strongly in her faith that she came back again. They sent her away, but she returned a third time. This time, they put a rope around her neck and hanged her. She was very brave, even though she was scared.

Why Mary is a Hero!

Mary Dyer is remembered because she was so brave. She wouldn't give up her beliefs, even when it was dangerous. She wanted everyone to be free to believe what they wanted. Because of brave people like Mary, things changed. Now, in America, people can believe in different things without being punished. She is a hero for standing up for freedom of thought!
