Puritans
Key Facts
Who Were These Puritans?
Puritans were a group of people who wanted to change the Church of England. They thought it was too much like the Catholic Church and wanted to make it simpler and more 'pure.' They believed in living very strict lives, following God's rules very closely. They wore plain clothes, sang simple songs, and believed in working hard.
They were like super-serious rule-followers who wanted to set a good example for everyone!
Sailing to a New Land!
Many Puritans decided to leave England to find a place where they could practice their religion freely. They sailed across the big, wide ocean on ships like the Mayflower. This journey was long and tough, lasting many weeks!
They landed in a place called New England, in what is now the United States. They wanted to build a new community where they could live by their own rules and beliefs, far from the King and the old church.
Building a New Life
When the Puritans arrived, they had to build everything from scratch! They built wooden houses, churches, and farms. Life was hard, and they faced many challenges, like cold winters and learning to live with Native American tribes.
They worked together to survive and create their new towns. Their towns were often built around their church, showing how important religion was to them. They believed in community and helping each other out.
Why We Remember Them
The Puritans are important because they were some of the first English people to start big communities in America. They helped shape the way people lived and thought in the early days of the United States. Their ideas about hard work, education, and having a say in how things were run influenced many things we still have today.
They were brave adventurers who took a big risk to follow their beliefs!
