Levee

Have you ever seen a big river? Sometimes, rivers can get really full, especially when it rains a lot or when snow melts. A levee is like a giant, long hill made of dirt or rocks that stands next to the river.

It's built to be taller than the river water when it's super high, so the water stays inside the river and doesn't flood nearby towns or fields. Think of it like a bathtub with a really high edge to stop water from spilling out!

People have been building levees for a very, very long time, even before cars and electricity! Ancient people in places like Mesopotamia, which is now Iraq, built them thousands of years ago to help control the big rivers there. They used mud and stones to make these walls.

Today, we still build levees, but we use big machines to make them even stronger and taller, sometimes as tall as a three-story building!

Levees are like superheroes for our communities. They protect our homes, schools, and farms from getting flooded by rivers. Imagine if your playground got filled with water – that wouldn't be fun! Levees help keep our neighborhoods safe and dry. They also help farmers by making sure their crops get the right amount of water from the river, not too much and not too little.

It's pretty simple! When a river's water level starts to rise, the levee acts like a barrier. The water hits the side of the levee and can't go over it because the levee is higher.

It's like trying to throw a ball over a really tall fence. The water just stays put in the riverbed. Some levees are made of packed earth, like a giant mound of dirt, while others have strong concrete on the outside to make them extra tough.
