Who Was Emperor Julius Nepos?

Julius Nepos was a Roman emperor, but not for very long! He was in charge of the Western Roman Empire for just over a year, from 474 to 475 AD. Think of him like a king of a really big kingdom a long, long time ago.

He was born in a place called Dalmatia, which is now part of Croatia. Even after he lost his throne in Italy, he still thought he was the emperor and people in other parts of the Roman world agreed!

His Big Adventure to Become Emperor!

Julius Nepos wasn't even supposed to be emperor at first. Another emperor was in charge, but then he was gone. The emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire, Leo I, wanted someone new.

He picked Julius Nepos! Julius sailed to Italy with his army to take charge. He arrived and quickly became the emperor in Rome.

He was the last emperor to be crowned in Rome for a very, very long time, until another famous leader named Charlemagne almost 400 years later!

Trying to Be a Great Emperor

Julius Nepos wanted to make the Roman Empire strong again. He tried to fight off enemies like the Visigoths and make groups like the Burgundians follow the rules. But it was a tough job! The Western Roman Empire was getting weaker. He couldn't stop the Visigoths from taking over parts of a place called Gaul. This made his job even harder, and soon, someone else took over his job as emperor.

Emperor in Exile!

Even though Julius Nepos lost his palace in Italy, he didn't give up! He went back to his home, Dalmatia, and still called himself the emperor. The Eastern Roman Empire still thought he was the real emperor.

Later, a new leader named Odoacer took over Italy. Odoacer even made coins with Julius Nepos's face on them, but he didn't really listen to him. Sadly, Julius Nepos was murdered by his own generals in 480 AD, maybe in a big old palace.
