Meet the Emperor Who Loved to Share Power!

Diocletian was a Roman emperor a super long time ago, from 284 to 305 AD. He wasn't born fancy; his parents were not rich or famous. But he was a brave soldier who worked his way up to become the boss of the whole Roman Empire!

He was so important that people called him 'Jovius,' which means 'like Jupiter,' the king of the gods. He was a real superhero of his time, saving the empire from big problems.

How Diocletian Made the Empire Easier to Manage

The Roman Empire was HUGE, like a giant playground covering many countries! Diocletian thought it was too big for one person to rule. So, he had a brilliant idea: he split it into four parts!

He kept the East part for himself and gave the West part to his friend Maximian. Then, they each picked a helper, like a vice-president, to rule smaller pieces. This way, four leaders could watch over different areas, making sure everything was safe and sound.

Diocletian's Big Building Projects!

Diocletian wasn't just a ruler; he was also a builder! He built new cities and palaces that were closer to the edges of the empire, where problems might happen. One of his most amazing buildings was his palace on the coast of the sea.

It was so big and grand that even today, it's the center of a modern city called Split in Croatia! He also made sure the army was strong and the roads were good for soldiers to travel.

What Happened After Diocletian?

Diocletian was the first emperor to ever say, 'I'm done!' and retire. He went to live in his beautiful palace and even grew vegetables! But his plan to share power didn't last forever. After he left, the four leaders started arguing. However, Diocletian's ideas about how to run a big empire helped it stay strong for a long, long time, even after he was gone.
