Meet Queen Joanna!

Joanna was born a princess in a faraway land called Castile, which is now part of Spain. Her mom and dad were King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, who were super important rulers. Joanna was supposed to be a queen, but her life took some surprising turns. She got married to a prince named Philip, and they had lots of kids. Even though she was a queen, things didn't always go her way.

A Royal Family Tree of Ups and Downs

Joanna's family tree had a lot of branches! First, her older brother was supposed to be king, then her older sister, and then her nephew. But sadly, they all passed away. This made Joanna the next in line to be queen! When her mom, Queen Isabella, died, Joanna became the Queen of Castile. But her dad decided to rule for her, and later, her husband Philip also became king for a little while.

The Queen Who Couldn't Rule

Even though Joanna was the queen, she wasn't able to make many decisions. People said she was unwell, and she was kept in a palace for many, many years. It was like being in a very fancy prison! Her father and then her son ruled the kingdoms while she was still the queen on paper. She lived a very long life, until she was 75 years old, but she spent most of it away from the public eye.

Why Joanna's Story is a Big Deal

Joanna's story is important because it shows how royal families worked back then. Marriages were often planned for important reasons, and who became king or queen could change very quickly. Her life also shows how powerful men in her family took control, even when she was the rightful queen. Her son, Charles, became a very powerful emperor, and Joanna's life was a big part of how that happened.
